Ah, (not so) young love! On September 12, 1846, Elizabeth Barrett, nearly 40 and accompanied only by her lady’s maid, snuck out of her family home to secretly wed the 33-year-old Robert Browning. A week later, the pair fled to Europe, prompting a terse marriage announcement in a London newspaper.
Barrett’s father never spoke to her again.
